INDIANAPOLIS -- Police are investigating a homicide after a man was found dead inside an apartment building on Indy's northeast side, right across the street from the state fairgrounds. Just after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Overlook at the Fairgrounds Apartments along 38th Street, IMPD was called and found 38-year-old Jeremy Patton dead inside a fourth-floor apartment. Managers at the apartment complex say the victim did not live in the building, but the victim's ex-wife said he was no stranger to the property. She and police are still trying to figure out what led to his death. "I'm pretty much just devastated. People's hearts are so cold," said Angela Patton. Angela Patton said she separated from her ex-husband last year, but still talked to him on a regular basis. In fact, just before he was killed, the victim called Angela Patton while standing at the front door of the Overlook and said he had been having problems with people he knew on the fourth floor. "He said these people don't like me," said Angela Patton. "So I said what did you do to them? He said he didn't do nothing to them. I told him, 'Jeremy, you need to leave from there' and that's the last time I talked to him." An affidavit filed last week also showed that police were called to the same apartment where the homicide took place after Jeremy Patton witnessed two men fighting. Man found dead at apartment complex near State Fairgrounds Jeremy Patton did nothing wrong at that time, but another man was arrested for an active warrant. IMPD said they were first dispatched to the scene Wednesday night for a burglary in progress, but once they arrived and found the victim, there did not appear to be any signs of a break-in. "So we aren't quite sure what happened since we don't have any witnesses, but it's a little unusual we got it as a burglary in progress and there is no forced entry," said IMPD captain Don Weilhammer. The apartment complex does have numerous surveillance cameras on the property. Police hope that the cameras help their investigation. Angela Patton just wants whoever killed her ex-husband brought to justice. "It's pretty much out of my hands, but everyone needs to be held accountable for what they do to others," said Angela. Police said a person of interest was detained at the scene, but they have since been released pending further investigation. As always, anyone with information on the case can contact either IMPD's homicide office or Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS.  The lead investigator is Detective Kevin Roell.  He can be reached at (317) 327-3475 or at [email protected]
