We have started to thaw out here in central Indiana. Indianapolis hit freezing today. Spots in our southern counties saw highs approach the upper 30s. Tonight we'll dip back below freezing for overnight lows before temps rebound Friday. With an upper-level ridge building out west, the warmer temperatures aren't done around here yet. Highs Friday will have above-freezing temperatures areawide with many spots hitting 40° for a high temperature. Regional Temperatures Thursday Then, our transition to the cold begins. It kicks off with a weather maker bringing rain Friday night (after the commute in the late evening) and turning over to snow on Saturday morning. This will occur as the cold air rushes in in the wake of a passing cold front. The earlier transfer to snow will be in the spots that keep a snowpack following Friday's rain. It's possible anywhere from a dusting to isolated amounts over an inch is possible on Saturday given the latest trends. All precipitation will exit by midday on Saturday. Snow Probabilities Through Saturday Starting Saturday afternoon, temperatures fall just in time for the historically coldest time of the year for Indianapolis. This week marks the COLDEST low temps on record for #Indy. Coincidentally, it was this time last year that we were in the middle of a cold stretch. On this date 48 years ago, the low dipped to -20° with a brutal wind chill of -44°, one of the coldest ever. We'll get a taste of the polar vortex that's been stuck in the north pole for awhile. Thanks to a strong jet stream, it usually stays at bay. However, a few times during the winter the jet stream buckles and allows that air in. Highs in the teens Sunday come before highs in the single digits Monday and Tuesday. Our record "cold" highs could be beaten on Monday the 20th (5°/1970) and Tuesday the 21st (10°/1930). We have highs in the single digits on both days. The last time we had a low of at least -10° was January 30, 2019, almost six years ago.
