INGALLS, Ind. - Changes will soon be coming to a busy intersection in Madison County. The intersection at State Road 13 and County Road 800 South is one that our FOX59/CBS4 team has reported on several times over the last few years. Since January of 2022, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office along with the Ingalls Police Department have responded to a total of 21 property damage accidents and 11 accidents with injuries.  And that's just the most recent data. That does not include the serious crash from November 2021. That crash involved three teenagers, and two of the three were airlifted to hospitals in critical condition. “I have been here for eight years and this is the worst couple of years of traffic I've ever experienced,” said Rob Benner who lives nearby. “I live just right here and I hear the sirens all day.” INDOT knows this is a problematic intersection and their crews have been trying to add a traffic signal there since the summer of 2021. However, some complications led to multiple delays. “We saw some challenges with purchasing of right-of-way, utility coordinations, environmental work, things of that nature, but we are excited to be to the point, [where we are] very close to construction,” said Natalie Garrett, the strategic communications director with INDOT. Between then and now, INDOT made some small improvements including adding more signage. “There were some interim improvements that INDOT did make at this intersection in late 2021,” Garrett said. “Over the past few years, we have placed some additional signage, refreshed the stop lines there at the stop signs, added rumble strips to give an extra warning to drivers that there is a stop ahead and some adjustments to speed limit signs there in the area. We have made some interim improvements as we make our way to the actual signal.” And after all of the delays, the long-awaited traffic signal will be going up very soon. “A traffic signal will control all directions of traffic,” Garrett said. “It gives plenty of green time for each direction, you are not looking across multiple lanes of traffic trying to find that clear space for you to cross.” “That makes me very happy,” Benner said.  Construction is expected to begin this spring following utility relocation work. There is no exact timeline yet for when construction will be complete.
