BLACKFORD COUNTY, Ind. -- A Hartford City man who was previously convicted of child molesting was recently arrested after he reportedly made child pornography images with artificial intelligence software. According to court documents, 49-year-old Daniel Hall has been charged with: Two counts of child exploitation, each a Level 5 felony Five counts of possession of child pornography, each a Level 6 felony A series of CyberTips were reportedly linked to a Gmail account associated with Hall. According to court documents, several images of suspected child pornography were reportedly uploaded to Hall's account in May, June, July and October 2024. Officer charged with drunk driving in Christmas Day police SUV crash; 2 others charged with helping cover it up As part of the investigation, detectives reviewed the files uploaded. Several of the images were created by AI software to remove clothing from a child in a photo and add genital and breasts on the child. In one specific case, Hall reportedly deepfaked an image of a celebrity and morphed the photo to make it look like a fully nude child in the celebrity's image. Other files reviewed by detectives did not appear to be computer-generated images, the court documents stated. Hall reportedly had a previous child molestation conviction out of Blackford County in 2004. On Jan. 10, detectives searched Hall's home. During the search, more than 10 phones were seized, as well as multiple laptops and tablets, CD's and a camera. During an interview with detectives, Hall reportedly told officers that the photos were not real, stating he created them using an AI generator app on his phone. When asked to give detectives an age range of the girls whose photos he created, Hall reportedly said that they spanned from 10-13 years old. Indiana Republican lawmakers seek to crack down on county prosecutors Hall told detectives that he would use photos from someone he was friends with on social media, or photos from a suggested friend's social media account. When asked if there was any child pornography on any of the seized devices, Hall reportedly said that there was "no legitimate child pornography photos and any photos that may look like a minor (were) AI-generated." "In (Hall's) Google Photos (account), (detectives were) able to see over 700 photos, many of which being AI-generated pornographic images of adults and minors," the documents said. "(Detectives) also could see several files with names attached to them, some of these files contained AI-generated pornographic photos of apparent children." Hall was taken into custody at the Blackford County Security Center, the documents read.
