(EL PASO/TELLER COUNTIES, Colo.) — Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of the Pikes Peak Region is hoping community members can stop by one of its many events this month and next, where people can learn more about becoming a CASA volunteer. "CASA of the Pikes Peak Region provides a volunteer’s voice in court for children who are victims of abuse, neglect or domestic conflict and promotes community awareness of these issues to ensure safe and permanent homes," according to its website. CASA serves both El Paso and Teller counties and the following volunteer sessions, both in-person and virtual, are scheduled for later this month and in February. "The main thing a CASA volunteer does, is they become that one consistent adult for a child, these children have gone through chaos and trauma and the CASA volunteers come by and they stand by them," she said. Kahn added that the need for volunteers is evident. "About 800 kids a year, just in El Paso and Teller counties are referred to CASA, so we really depend on kind-hearted people, who love children to come in and help us meet the needs of all those kids," she said.
