NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) -- A local business is stepping in to help homeowners who are out thousands of dollars after paying to have their roof replaced by a company that stopped answering their calls and ultimately lost their contractor's license. Last November, News 2 spoke to two homeowners in Summerville who said they handed over money to Orange Elephant Roofing, but then couldn't get ahold of anyone from the company. We also shared that a different roofing company, Patriot Roofing was offering to help anyone in these situations by doing the work at cost. Meaning, that homeowners only have to pay the cost of labor and materials. "I discussed with my partners Spencer and Nick as soon as we found out about this, and without hesitation, they agreed," the owner of Patriot Roofing, Jason Dores said. Now, months later, Dores said they have received dozens of calls from homeowners with similar stories involving Orange Elephant looking for help. On Wednesday, Brett Stephens had his roof replaced by Patriot Roofing. He said he'd been waiting months for this day after originally contacting Orange Elephant in September to inquire about replacing his roof. "My wife and I wanted to get a new roof before Christmas," he explained. "The house was built in 1981 -- way overdue for a new roof." He put down a deposit of $6,300 with Orange Elephant and was told the installation would happen in October. But Stephens said that day came and went with no updates from the company. "We put the installment for half down and then as soon as the money went through, the communication turned off," he said. "I called every office and all of their different locations and really didn't get any feedback at all. The one time I did connect with someone in the Texas office, they hung up on me." Stephens still has not heard back from Orange Elephant. However, he said after he and his wife did more research and saw homeowners in the same situation, he decided to give up and reach out to Patriot Roofing instead. "I actually saw an article with you guys on the news that Jason and the guys at Patriot Roofing were helping out victims of the scam," he explained. "So I reached out to Jason and here we are -- and that was only three or four weeks ago." "We're locally owned so we wanted to try to do something for our community and we figured if we can help these people and do it at cost we are not going to lose anything," Dores said about offering the deal. "We're not gaining anything, but we are helping people in the community." As of mid-January, Dores said they have already scheduled to replace the roofs for more than 30 homeowners who were victims of Orange Elephant. "Some were cautious when I first started talking to them obviously because they were a tad gun shy because of scar tissue," Dores said. "Multiple cried -- and that's when it really kinda tugs at you. You feel bad they put faith in somebody and they were taken advantage of." Stephens said moving forward, finding a company that followed through on its promise has restored his trust, and he's relieved that he and his family can put the situation behind them. "And I'm thankful that even though that was a frustrating experience, Jason and the guys at Patriot Roofing turned that into restoring my faith," he said. "We've got a lot of plans to upgrade this home further and although we had the hiccup with the roof, it might delay other projects but it just feels really good to get this one out of the way." Patriot Roofing is still offering this deal to homeowners dealing with similar issues with Orange Elephant. Dores can be reached at (843) 640-3317.
