12year death case reopened: Investigators reexamine Hillsboro man's death in the Badlands
Jan 16, 2025
WATFORD CITY, ND (KXNET) — Investigators are now re-opening a case after 12 years of not knowing how a 51-year-old Hillsboro man died.
McKenzie County Sheriff's Office told KX News on Thursday that detectives are looking further into Duncan Templer's death from back in 2013.
The original press release states that before Templer's death, he told family members he intended to take his own life in the Badlands.
His semi-truck was found parked on a scenic overlook 22 miles south of Watford City, and an intensive search was done in the area. Investigators said after a week of searching without finding Templer's body, it was called off because of the rugged terrain.
Two months later, officers said a hunter and his son found Templer's body in the Badlands.
Investigators said, at the time, there were no signs of foul play. However, the medical examiner deemed his cause of death undetermined.
Lt. Edward Martinez with the McKenzie County Sheriff's Office told KX News, that Templer's daughter has pushed for his case to be reopened. She also emailed KX News saying, she's always believed her dad's death was a homicide.
Lt. Martinez said that since the original case was closed in 2013, they have a full new team of investigators and have officially reopened it.
He said they are in the early stages of rounding up documents from the original records and plan to move forward with this re-investigation. He said the case has not been re-opened as a homicide, yet, but they will do a complete investigation into his death.
KX News plans to sit down for an interview with the detectives on the case as their investigation unfolds. We will continue to bring you updates as they become available.

Body of missing man may have been found
"The body of Duncan Templer, 51, of Hillsboro, N.D., who apparently committed suicide in the Badlands south of Watford City in July, may have been found by hunters.
According to a news release from the McKenzie County Sheriff’s Dept., on Sept. 28 hunters found the body of a deceased male, believed to be Templer, east of U.S. Highway 85 off of Forest Service Road 828.
Templer, who has been missing since July 24, had told members of his family that he intended to commit suicide in the Badlands.
After his semi-truck was found parked in a scenic overlook 22 miles south of Watford City, an intensive search was conducted of the area. After a week of searching without finding Templer’s body, the search was called off because of the rugged terrain in which the search was being conducted.
According to the news release, the Sheriff’s Dept. believes that the body found is that of Templer. The body was found approximately three miles east of Templer’s last known location.
There were no signs of foul play and the deceased body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner for positive identification."
