AUSTIN (ABJ) — Colossal Biosciences Inc., a Texas-based startup using genetic engineering to re-create the woolly mammoth and other extinct species, has raised a massive funding round that makes it perhaps the most valuable venture-backed startup in Texas history.
The company said Jan. 15 that it has raised $200 million in series C funding led by TWG Global, the investment firm headed by Guggenheim Capital founder and CEO Mark Walter and Thomas Tull, founder and chairman of investment firm U.S. Innovative Technology and founder, chairman and CEO of Tulco LLC.
The new funding round valued the company at $10.2 billion, according to Colossal — which in startup parlance makes it a "decacorn," an even rarer form of a unicorn, the term for a valuation of at least $1 billion. The company said it is the first Texas-founded and headquartered company in the state to achieve such a high valuation, although some ventured backed private companies with higher valuations, such as SpaceX, have moved their headquarters to Texas.
