COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is said he is “close” to making a decision about who he will send to Washington to fill Vice President-elect JD Vance’s now-vacated Senate seat.   “The reason that we've not made an announcement yet, we’re getting close, it's just the gravity of this decision, the importance of this decision,” DeWine said. “The person that I pick may be there for a long time. They're going to be one of only two Ohioans who represent us in the U.S. Senate. They're only one of one of 100. This is a huge job. It's a very, very important job.”  Will flags fly at full-staff on Inauguration Day in Ohio? Last week, DeWine said he would “probably” make his announcement this week. We are nearing the end of the week, so NBC4’s Natalie Fahmy asked if he is committed to following that timeline.  “We’ll have something later,” DeWine said. “No comment on that yet.”  DeWine did not specify how much “later” or whether he meant by the end of the week or before Monday’s inauguration. Not only is DeWine staying quiet about when he will make his announcement but also about who he will appoint.  The governor did, however, confirm that he has recently met with one rumored frontrunner for the seat -- Ohio businessman Vivek Ramaswamy -- but did not say it was about the U.S. Senate seat.  Fugitive’s arrest leads to body being found in east Columbus basement “I met with [Ramaswamy] last weekend,” DeWine said. “I've met with a lot of people. We have a lot of good people and that's all I'm going to say.”     Lt. Gov. Jon Husted — another apparent frontrunner — was asked for a third time if he can say whether he is interested in the job.  “I am not talking about that,” Husted said.  DeWine immediately added, “We are not talking about that today.”  The only thing DeWine has given away are some details about what kind of person he wants to send to Washington.  “The person I pick is going to really understand Ohio and be an advocate for Ohio,” DeWine said. “Will they be two of the newest members of the Senate? Yes, they will. But that's, you know, that's where we are.”  Who can be held accountable for cyberattacks? DeWine said there is one area in particular that he expects whoever he appoints to be focused on, on the heels of an announcement about defense manufacturing in Ohio.  “This is a perilous time as far as our national defense,” he said. “As far as our foreign policy, this is something that we look, frankly, to U.S. Senators to focus on and whoever I pick will have to be focused on that.”   DeWine does not have a hard deadline to make the appointment.
