Perry Village Council is preparing to take another look at a three-year strategic plan that was approved in 2024. Council President Jean Schonauer said she and her fellow legislators soon will embark on an annual review of the village’s current strategic plan. As part of that assessment, council will consider adding new entries to the document, or amending existing items. Schonauer discussed that project during council’s Jan. 9 meeting. “The timing (to review the strategic plan) is really good right now because Perry Village just has so many great things going on,” she said. “It will give us an opportunity to look at potential growth, potential issues and things that we’re going to want to make sure are in the strategic plan and stay focused on those.” Perry Village Council approved the community government’s newest strategic plan, covering the years 2024 through 2026, in February of last year. The eight-page document lists goals, objectives and action steps for the following village government departments, functions and properties: Governance and workforce development; safety forces; public works; finance; parks, recreation and community activities; economic development, planning and zoning; communications; and facilities. Each action step is accompanied by the designation of person(s) or a committee responsible; a timeline for the endeavor; and if funds are needed to accomplish the deed. The action step categories also offer spaces for review notes and annual updates. It’s been about a decade since council adopted Perry Village’s first-ever, five-year strategic plan. That document spanned the years of 2016 through 2020. In 2020, when the COVID pandemic created an array of unexpected challenges for local governments, Perry Village decided to shorten the duration of its future strategic plans from five years to three years. Subsequent plans were approved by council in 2021 and 2024. Council strives to re-examine the village’s strategic plans on a yearly basis until the documents expire. “It’s not like a one-and-done, we made this document and now we’re not going to touch it for three years,” Schonauer said in 2024 after council approved the latest strategic plan. “We look at this strategic plan, work with it and we can change that any time throughout the process. That’s the whole purpose of this.”
