Congresswoman Tenney introduces bill to prevent states from banning certain guns

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A new law was introduced to prevent states from banning the sale and possession of certain firearms.
The Second Amendment Guarantee Act (SAGA Act) was introduced Wednesday by Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24), who said, if passed, the law would protect the second amendment rights of US citizens.
The bill would ban states from prohibiting the sale, manufacturing, importation, or possession of any rifle or shotgun permitted under federal law.
Tenney has been critical of the SAFE Act (Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement), which was passed under former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. The SAFE Act requires universal background checks for buying guns, increases penalties on certain gun charges, and mandates life in prison for anyone who murders a first responder.
Tenney has called the SAFE Act unconstitutional and wants to pass the SAGA Act to protect citizens' Second Amendment rights.
"The SAGA Act nullifies New York's unconstitutional SAFE Act and prevents other states from enacting laws that violate the Second Amendment," Tenney said in a statement. "This legislation upholds our country's founding principle of protecting the rights of law-abiding Americans, even from liberal states with anti-gun policies,"
Meanwhile in Rochester, local leaders remain focused on addressing gun violence. Mayor Evans recently extended the gun violence state of emergency. Evans also pointed to Governor Hochul's plans to prevent domestic violence offenders from purchasing firearms as a way to help decrease gun violence.
