BERGEN, N.Y. (WROC) -- Amid the Greater Rochester region's freezing temperatures, resources for the unhoused and those in community shelters are more essential than ever. At Byron-Bergen Senior High School, every new year starts with an assembly where students are encouraged to study hard, have fun in sports or activities, and also be kind. That final call to action really stuck with three of the senior students. "Being your average teenager, you kind of just blow it aside and you are like, well there’s so many other people in the world. They are probably going to do it. Being able to do it yourselves just means so much more," says Shawna Spinks. Shawna, Samantha Beale, and Isabelle Best have been friends for 10 years and joined the Liberty Partnerships club at their school to spend more time together. The enrichment and study group run through Genesee Community College brought in blanket making kits for the students to keep or give away as holiday presents, but these girls saw a YWCA flyer begging for winter essentials. "I know I have a home to go to, and I have a bed that has blankets, and I have heat in my house. I know some people don’t, and like some of my friends don’t. I just want to make sure that everybody, especially like younger kids, has somewhere warm to stay and like to have something," Isabelle shares with News 8's Mikhaela Singleton. "I personally don’t know, but I can think about it and I think that it’s horrible. I would never wish it even on my worst enemies. Like man, even if I dislike you, I wouldn’t want that to happen," explains Shawna. The girls decided they’d donate any blankets they made to the YWCA, even enlisting younger students to join in, enjoy the charity and crafting. "I really love seeing people smile at the things I give them. It makes me feel really good to know that it’s, like appreciated, and not like, going to be thrown out," says Samantha. "I also think it’s great that they wanted the younger kids to help and that they were able to kind of lead it up and be role models for the other kids," adds Byron-Bergen's Liberty Partnerships facilitator, Diana Kindig-Grillo. These girls call on teens like them — if you think, sure someone out there can do it, then consider, why not you? "Always be on the lookout for people that are in need, and if you have something extra that you don’t need or like, don’t necessarily have that you would want to give someone else, I always think that if you want it yourself, then you would want to give it to someone else," Samantha encourages.
