Pet Salute: Shawnee County K9 Deputy Drego retires
Jan 16, 2025
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Retirement can be 'ruff' for some, but for this former officer it's cause for celebration!
K-9 Deputy Drego ended his decade of service with the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office in late 2024. The German shepherd joined the Sunflower State after his training in the Czech Republic.
His handlers say Drego is one of the most active and productive K-9's Shawnee County has seen. The good boy has the stats to prove it too. Trained in patrol and explosive detection, he has no shortage of accomplishments.

“He’s done more than 250 explosive sweeps on facilities in all types of venues here in Shawnee County," Shawnee County Sheriff Brian Hill said. "He’s done 15,000 actual sniffs from detections of different explosives to narcotics.”
Drego also deployed in 180 patrols and he's apprehended more than 70 felons in Shawnee County. He is in good hands for his long awaited retirement, spending the rest of his dog days catching Z's instead of criminals with his former partner and handler, Deputy Guy Gardner.
