Mild breezy before winter storm moves into New Mexico
Jan 16, 2025
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Cold air but not as cold air is the big weather story this morning as compared to Wednesday morning. Despite some clouds in far-northern mountain areas, as well as South New Mexico, with mostly clear skies with the dry air. Temperatures for nearly all are still below freezing with light winds making it feel a little bit colder, but temperatures will rise with even drier air in the short term before our next pattern change kicks up the winds.

Leftover low-level moisture from early this week's weakening storm has subsided big-time, but with still below-normal morning temperatures this morning, especially in some northern to western valley areas that are as cold as Wednesday morning, but everywhere else is slightly starting off milder than yesterday, except for the slightly colder air in Southeast New Mexico. Air temperatures have been as low as at least a few degrees below zero from parts of the San Luis Valley through the San Juan Mountains to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, as well as parts of the West Highlands, but mostly in the upper single digits, teens, 20s, and lower 30s elsewhere.
Skies will mostly clear out from clouds with lower humidity as from the morning school commute throughout the afternoon, temperatures will reach into the high 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and lower 60 degrees from northwest to southeast from high to low elevation.
Despite flurries with sprinkles mostly southwest of the Metro Friday morning, skies will clear our later tomorrow as the warming trend with drier westerly winds will be in earnest before our next wintry pattern later this weekend, bringing in at least a couple of rounds of snow for more locations with the lowest temperatures of the season likely for some by early next week.
