PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Two Rhode Island State Troopers from the 2024 academy class have been fired for violating division rules, regulations and policies after the troopers shared a social media video regarding a pedestrian fatality, according to the Rhode Island State Police.
The victim of the accident was identified by family members as Alex Montesino, 21.
The family told ABC6 that the now fired troopers, while observing highway footage of the incident, were heard laughing about the incident on a video that was then shared to social media.
The Rhode Island State Police investigated this claim, leading to the termination of the two troopers.
“We are deeply disappointed that these recently hired Troopers displayed such poor judgment and lacked empathy for this family’s tragedy,” said Colonel Darnell S. Weaver, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of the Department of Public Safety.
The incident occurred at 11:40 p.m. on October 12 on I-95 in Providence in the area of the Clifford Street overpass.
Investigators determined that Montesino stopped his car in the breakdown lane, walked into the travel lane and was struck by several vehicles.
This is a developing story, stay with ABC6 for further details.
