PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) -- Virginia drivers can expect to see more electric vehicle charging ports after leaders announced more than $10 million in federal funding for the Virginia Department of Energy. Senators Tim Kaine (Va.-D) and Mark Warner (Va.-D) said in a joint statement that the Commonwealth has been given the greenlight to build 392 electric vehicle charging posts in urban and rural tourist destinations. The two senators have been advocates for implementing "clean energy" resources in Virginia. The grant comes as part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Grant Program. Locations for more than half of the new charging ports are set to be installed in "disadvantaged communities," according to the release. “Electric vehicles will help create healthier communities for future generations by reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions. However, it’s critical that Virginians who choose to purchase EVs have access to charging stations so they can get where they need to go,” the senators stated, in a release. “We’re glad the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law we helped pass is bringing this funding to Virginia to install EV charging ports across the Commonwealth, especially in areas that receive a high volume of visitors.” In 2022, Warner and Kaine announced around $16 million in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding to assist with the installation of EV charging ports.
