(WFRV) - The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) has confirmed the first pediatric influenza-associated death in Wisconsin for the 2024-2025 season. Officials with the Wisconsin DHS report that respiratory illness activity is currently high throughout the state, with ER visits increasing due to flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), especially in infants and young children. "We are saddened to announce the season's first death of a child from flu in Wisconsin, and our deepest sympathy goes out to this child's family," said State Health Officer Paula Tran. "Respiratory viruses remain a significant health concern, especially in children. If you or your loved ones have not received your flu or COVID-19 vaccine yet this season, it's not too late." ‘It’s gone beyond what I imagined’: Kaukauna Coffee and Tea launches new initiative to support local students The DHS's release also notes that nationwide, 16 pediatric influenza-associated deaths have been reported. Health officials encourage everyone six months and older to get vaccinated against flu and COVID-19, and infants 8 months or younger and those 9-19 months with an increased risk of RSV can receive the RSV vaccine.
