As someone with a major soft spot for Downtown Fresno and its ongoing revitalization, I always try to support new businesses in the area and keep tabs on changes with existing ones. Naturally, I was disappointed when less-than-ideal working conditions led to the closure of Fulton Street Coffee, a spot I frequented for iced coffee before weekend trips to the Flower Market at Sun Stereo Warehouse or thrifting along Van Ness. Thankfully, the space didn’t stay vacant for long. Under new ownership by Saul Pinero and Nathan Olvera, the café has been reimagined and reopened as Sacred Heart Coffee. The duo transformed the space with fresh paint, stylish tile work, and modern furniture and décor. The interior now feels open, airy, and minimalist, with a modern luxe vibe enhanced by gold and red accents that reflect the café’s Sacred Heart theme. A Fresh Experience with Familiar Comforts I recently visited Sacred Heart Coffee to see how it measured up in terms of coffee, service, and atmosphere—and I was impressed. Upon entering, I was greeted with warm but unobtrusive service. The menu, conveniently displayed near the register, immediately caught my eye because they make their syrups in-house. Current flavors include vanilla, brown sugar, sweet cinnamon, honey, caramel, and lavender—always a promising sign of shop that cares about the art of making a quality coffee drink. For those who loved Fulton Street Coffee’s iconic Café con Leche, good news: it’s back! This sweet, iced, cinnamon-infused drink remains a menu staple. Sacred Heart also offers an array of traditional espresso-based beverages, including lattes, cappuccinos, cortados, americanos, and espresso shots, along with drip coffee and cold brew. Non-coffee drinkers will appreciate their alternatives like hot cocoa, matcha, chai, and chocolate milk, with milk options including whole, oat, and almond. A Coffee Lover’s Perspective Everyone has their preferences when it comes to coffee. For me, I like to taste the coffee itself—its richness and boldness—while enjoying a balance of flavors from milk and sweeteners. Too often, sweetness overpowers the drink, masking the essence of espresso. At Sacred Heart Coffee, however, they got it just right. I ordered an iced latte with whole milk, half brown sugar, and half sweet cinnamon syrup. The result? Perfection. The espresso was robust yet smooth, with just the right touch of sweetness to complement the flavors. Even better, I didn’t have to request it “half sweet” as I often do at some other coffee shops. The drink was prepared quickly and priced competitively, if not slightly lower than similar local spots. I also grabbed an oat milk chai for a coworker, and she thoroughly enjoyed it. A Space to Work, Relax, or Gather During my visit, the café buzzed with small groups and individuals working, studying, or just enjoying a moment of calm. The atmosphere was welcoming and relaxed, with sunlight pouring in and everything sparkling clean. Sacred Heart Coffee is a wonderful addition to Downtown Fresno, offering a space where residents, workers, and visitors can gather and make it their own. Whether you’re a regular downtown or just love discovering great coffee, this spot deserves a visit.
