BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Louisiana is forecasted to have extremely cold weather next week. Meanwhile, the chances of having a winter storm are trending downward. Enjoy the next couple of days of warmer weather because it will quickly become very cold. Extreme cold weather in Louisiana next week 🥶 Monday morning will be very chilly with lows in the 20s. Highs will only be near 40 degrees. Dry weather is expected during the day, but that could change that evening and overnight. There has been some disagreement between models in the latest runs. If a low-pressure wave can develop along the south Texas coast, then it will track northeastward and the moisture with this wave will reach our area. If there is enough moisture to mix with the cold air then we'll have a wintry mix of precipitation between Monday night and Tuesday. Wintry mix means frozen and freezing precipitation like sleet, freezing rain and ice. The latest model runs (mainly the GFS and the Euro) show hardly any rain at all. We'll continue to monitor the latest model runs. The main concern for Louisiana is the next round of Arctic air. Highs will be in the 30s and 40s all next week. Mornings will be very chilly with temperatures in the 20s. How does cold weather impact the Louisiana crawfish industry? Weather for the rest of this week ☀️🌦️ High temperatures will be in the low to mid-60s on Thursday and Friday. Highs will be near 70 on Saturday. The Baton Rouge area will have a wet Saturday morning as scattered showers will move through our area and end around lunchtime. Temperatures will slowly drop on Saturday evening. Temperatures will likely be in the 60s during the early evening, falling into the low 50s between dinnertime and midnight. Saturday MorningSunday Morning Colder temperatures and more wind on Sunday 🌬️ Sunday morning will feel quite brisk as temperatures continue falling overnight. Sunday morning's lows will be in the upper 30s. Winds will increase with northerly/northwesterly winds of cold air around 10-15 mph. Wind could gust up to 20 mph. Overall, Sunday will be cold, dry and breezy. Sunday Morning Extreme cold weather safety tips The National Weather Service suggests minimizing travel, staying indoors and keeping winter survival kit supplies in your car if you do have to travel. Other tips include learning how to shut off water valves to avoid pipe bursts, checking on the elderly and bringing pets inside. Stay warm by dressing in layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing and hats.
