Response time for Oakland Hills fire delayed due to recent budget cuts, station closures

OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) -- A fire broke out in Oakland Hills Wednesday off of Lochard Street. Fire crews were delayed in their response time due to budget cuts and closed-down stations. KRON4 went to the home and spoke with the chief and neighbors.
The home appears destroyed and all that is left is debris. Another great concern pertaining to this fire is its location. It's surrounded by thick vegetation, and the street it's on is pretty tucked away.
According to the Oakland Fire Department (OFD), they got the call around 1 a.m. Wednesday of reports of a fire. But OFD tells KRON4 it took them longer to arrive because the closer station to this area was shut down due to recent budget cuts.

Thankfully, no one was inside or injured. The home is currently vacant and was undergoing renovations.
KRON4 spoke to Rosemary, the neighbor who called 911 to report the fire. She has lived in the neighborhood for 20 years and says it felt like forever waiting for help.
"I'm disappointed," she said. "It's very concerning because I don't think my family or any other family should be the sacrifice for a budget. I truly believe our safety is important, so it's just sad that you're comprising my family over a budget issue."
According to Oakland Fire Chief Damon Covington, it took the first engine 10+ minutes to arrive.
Rosemary lives just a couple of feet away from this house and thinks they got lucky it wasn’t worse, and Covington agrees.
Covington if there were high winds on Wednesday, they would still be out here fighting this fire and the entire block of homes would have been lost.
This fire is still under investigation.
Oakland Fire’s current staffing issue could put the city at risk of seeing a similar tragedy to what is going on in Southern California.
