NEEDHAM, Mass. (WWLP) - Israel's prime minister is saying that a “last-minute crisis” with Hamas is now holding up approval of a cease-fire deal to pause the fighting in the Gaza Strip and release dozens of hostages.  Officials tout Gaza ceasefire, hostage deal as Israel says details still in flux Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office says a last-minute crisis with Hamas is holding up approval. He says the militant group has gone back on some parts of the agreement, and his cabinet won't approve the deal unless Hamas backs down. Israeli airstrikes, meanwhile, have killed dozens of people across the war-ravaged territory. If approved, the deal would bring home 33 Israeli hostages over 42 days who remain in Gaza, including a man with ties to Massachusetts. These hostages will be women and children, and others who are hurt or sick. Plus, Israel will release at least 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, including 100 who are serving life sentences. Israeli troops will also pull back into a half mile-wide buffer zone into Gaza's border, leaving all densely populated areas, and allowing Palestinians to safely return to their homes. Aid will also be allowed to flow into the strip, and Palestinians will be allowed to leave the territory to get medical help.  Ofer Calderon, 54, has been held in Gaza since October of 2023. Calderon was captured with his two children on October 7th. His kids were released after 59 days in captivity, but have been without their father for more than a year. His cousin, Jason Greenberg is from Needham. In August, Calderon was last seen in poor health, but Greenberg says he'll believe it when he sees it.  "I'll believe it when I see it. It's hard to imagine anybody being able to endure that long and even come back the same person so if he comes back alive that's a miracle," said Greenberg. Greenburg lost two family members in the October 7th attack that killed 1,200 people. If approved, the deal's first phase would also pause fighting for 42 days in Gaza.
