WAKEFIELD, N.H. (WWLP) - New Hampshire police have released new information on the four family members from Newton who died on Christmas Day from carbon monoxide poisoning. Woman drowns after falling through New Hampshire pond NBC Boston states that 52-year-old Matthew Goldstein, 54-year-old Lyla Goldstein, 22-year-old Valerie Goldstein and 19-year-old Violet Goldstein, all of Newton, Massachusetts, were found dead in a home on Province Lake Road. Matthew Goldstein was identified as a teacher at the Edith C. Baker School in Brookline. Police found the home's propane gas heating system had damage to its ventilation system, causing a malfunction. The New Hampshire Division of Fire Safety is urging people to check their heating systems, and to make sure that their carbon monoxide alarms are working. What is carbon monoxide? Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that kills without warning, states the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It claims the lives of hundreds of people every year and makes thousands more ill. Many household items including gas- and oil-burning furnaces, portable generators, and charcoal grills produce this poison gas. How to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning? Working CO alarms are the only way to detect this invisible killer since we can not see, smell, or taste carbon monoxide. Check and test your CO alarms at the same time that you test and check your smoke alarms. These alarms are crucial home safety tools and should be installed on every level of your house and should be tested every month. It is important to put in fresh alkaline batteries if your alarms use them, and replace the alarms if they’re more than 10 years old. Replace carbon monoxide alarms after five to seven years, depending on the specific model.
