However, a 9-0 second quarter run covering nearly two minutes gave Rialto breathing room going into halftime, and the Knights ran away with a 70-51 victory in a Sunkist League game.
“I knew Summit would bring the fight to us, and to their credit they competed well even when the score got away from them,” Rialto interim coach Tyrell Parks said. “But when we shoot the ball well we’re a tough offense to stop, and you saw that in the second half.”
Summit (14-4 overall, 1-1 in league) jumped out to an early 10-5 lead after Julianne Davis converted a three-point play. However, Rialto (14-4, 3-0) responded by scoring 10 of the next 14 points to take a one-point lead after a quarter. Destiny Rabino and Zanarah Livingston hit a pair of 3-pointers in that run for the Knights..
Valerie Rivera hit a free-throw line jumper with 6:50 left until intermission to give the Summit an 16-15 lead, but that was the SkyHawks’ final lead of the evening.
Rabino’s layup off a Livingston assist capped the aforementioned 9-0 run which pushed the Knights to their 10-point halftime lead.
Rialto junior guard Jackie Polk, who won a CIF State championship at Los Osos as a freshman before joining the Knights this season, hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored the first eight points of the second half to push Rialto’s lead to 46-30. She finished with 15 points, 11 of which came in the second half.
Nearly half (33) of Rialto’s points came from beyond the arc on Wednesday as four different Knights combined to hit 11 3-pointers with Polk, Rabino, and Livingston each hitting a trio. Rabino and Livingston finished with 15 and 11 points, respectively.
“We learned tonight that you can’t underestimate anyone and that you have to be ready to go from the tip,” Polk said. “Summit came out energized and ready to play at the start, but we did a nice job of picking things up as the game progressed and came away with a win.”
Destiny Bush’s layup off of her own steal cut Summit’s deficit to 50-36 with 3:38 left in the third quarter. However, Rialto went on one final run of 11-4 to put the game out of reach with. Carrington Davis scored on a layup to finish the quarter and give the Knights a 64-40 lead.
Davis, who recently crossed the 2,000-point threshold for her career, led Rialto with 17 points.
Rivera finished with 12 points to lead Summit.
Rialto continues Sunkist League play on Friday with a trip to Fontana, while Summit visits Carter.
