ROCHESTER, NY (WROC) – Wednesday marked National Pothole Day, and with poor road conditions at the top of mind, a recent report shows that the average driver in the Rochester area will lose more than $1,800 a year due to driving on rough roads.
Trip, a national transportation research nonprofit, highlighted some of its findings Wednesday in its "New York Transporation by the Numbers" report. The report examines road and bridge conditions throughout the state.
In the Rochester area, Trip found that 12% of locally or state-maintained roadways are in poor condition.
"We also learned today that vehicle traffic is not slowing down anytime soon, the projections show it is set to increase. So, we definitely need to prioritize safe roads and bridges for all," said Elizabeth Carey, director of public relations for AAA Western New York.
Weather forecast: Light snow lingers with eyes on arctic air next week
The report also showed that annually, the average Rochester motorist spent an extra 39 hours in traffic due to congestion, wasting roughly 17 gallons of gas.
