WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was announced by the U.S. on Wednesday. That evening, the Israeli prime minister said it was not yet finalized. If finalized, the deal is expected to lead to the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners. It will also allow humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. People supporting both sides in Wichita are relieved to see the ceasefire. They each have their own hopes for what comes next. "What gets in the way is often people or groups that really don't want peace between the two, not with these terms and not right now," said Rabbi Michael Davis of Congregation Emanu-El. "There's always someone who can sabotage it." "Hopefully, they can find another solution better than this," said Jay Hussien, a pro-Palestine demonstration organizer. "Better than the killing machine that has been going on for too long." Both men expect more conflict to come. "We need Gaza to relax a little bit, to calm down for a little bit for lets say a couple of months," Hussien said. With what time they do have under a ceasefire, they're hoping for recovery. "The hostages will be released slowly over time." The ceasefire comes with a return of Israeli hostages and relief for those in the Gaza Strip. "At minimum, people can go back to their houses, first of all," Hussien said. "Second of all, these innocent people can live." All sides are yearning for a lasting stretch of peace and an end to people's suffering. "We all feel this connection to Israel, and when Israel is hurt, we're hurt," Davis said. "We're praying for a ceasefire to hold." "We've never seen people get slaughtered like this in front of the whole world, and nobody can do anything about it," Hussien said. "Thats what we wanted, we wanted to stop this war." Davis says he's praying anyone who would get in the way of a peaceful resolution on both sides of negotiations will be shut out of the process. Hussein says the ceasefire will make it easier for him to reach his family in the Gaza Strip and send assistance.
