WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - A Wichita fashion designer's dress is being worn at an inaugural ball.
Hazel Stabler, a clothing designer for Buffalo Hunt Camp, has kept in touch with a high school friend who now lives in Virginia and has worked in politics for four decades.
La Donna Curzon, a University of Kansas graduate, was Stabler's high school debate partner. She has attended inaugural balls for every republican president since Ronald Reagan. She came to town on Wednesday for a dress fitting.
"We were lucky to go to Paris and see Hazel's show at Paris Fashion Week, and I was telling all of my friends about it, and then we decided that we, my husband and I, would go to the inaugural ball and a friend of mine suggested 'Oh! You oughta get your friend to design your inaugural dress!' 'Hey! That's a good idea!' So I approached the idea with Hazel; she was on it, and the rest is history," she said.
Curzon said that she is excited to attend the upcoming ball.

"This is probably the last presidential ball we'll ever go to, so why not? Let's go to it one more time. And to be able to wear this dress made by my friend Hazel is just icing on the cake," she said.
One of the two things that Curzon requested was that it had to be "Nancy Reagan Red."
"So because of the color of the dress, I went to my friends in Oklahoma City and had the fabric special-made," said Stabler. "It's exquisite. It's very beautiful."
The other thing that Curzon requested was that she wanted gold in the design.
"She did mention that she would like maybe to reference the eagle because it is our national bird, and so the tail of the dress has an image of a bald eagle that is done totally in rhinestones, and it's all hand-set in Australian crystal rhinestones," said Stabler.
Curzon will also be wearing some custom-made gold tennis shoes.
"I saw the ad for these Trump gold sneakers that is actually part of the Trump-Vance campaign. It's merchandise for the campaign, but it was a limited amount. They only made 1,000 of them, and they sold out, and I got a pair. I just thought they were fun and funky, and I thought, 'It'd be kind of fun to wear it to the ball with this dress!'"
"The sneakers are gold, really, a bright gold. So they're dressy looking, and I kind of think it brings a uniqueness to it," laughed Stabler.
Stabler, who has been designing for decades, says this is the first time she has designed for a presidential ball. She says this work inspired her to branch out.
"It's a real honor to do it," said Stabler. "I did a lot of sportswear in Paris and I think I'm going to lean more towards elegant gowns because this gown that I made was- it was a pleasure. It was just- it's just so elegant."
Curzon said that she's very proud of her friend and her achievements.
"I'm just amazed, and I'm just so happy," she said. "Thank you, Hazel! You're the best!"
