TOPEKA (KSNT) - A Topeka non-profit is bringing awareness to sex trafficking. Wednesday night at the Topeka Bible Church, Project 2 Restore kicked off Human Trafficking Awareness Month. People in the community had the opportunity to discuss how to fight trafficking, and how to support victims of it. Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay was also at the event to speak about the issue, and he told 27 News how he plans to address sex trafficking in this year's legislative session. "I am putting forth a bill with a very large coalition of other people supporting it designed to enhance the penalty around those who purchase sex," Kaygay said. "The whole idea is to deter that kind of conduct because what the studies tell us is between 60 and 80 percent of all those women in those situations are actually victims of human trafficking." Topeka city manager addresses plow efforts following historic blizzard "Many times the victims that we serve when we're just sitting down will ask us why didn't anyone see what was happening," Executive Director for Project 2 Restore, Angela Boles said. "And I think that's really what tonight is about. Is just really opening the eyes of the community to really see what sex trafficking really looks like."
