NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Lujan shared a personal story explaining his support for the Republican nominee for the U.S. Secretary of Transportation. President-elect Donald Trump nominated former Wisconsin representative Sean Duffy to lead the department. The Secretary of Transportation is tasked with maintaining the nation's aviation system, highways, railroads, and ports. Pam Bondi grilled over Trump’s influence at AG hearing: 5 takeaways Duffy said he is "safety-focused" and plans to end drunk driving. Senator Ben Ray Lujan spoke of his own experience with impaired drivers after getting hit by a drunk driver 30 years ago. That was after Duffy opened up about how his wife survived a head-on collision with a drunk driver. Senator Lujan said Duffy clearly had bipartisan support in the hearing. "I cannot think of a more noble and important priority in your work than your commitment to making our country safer for our families and our communities. I also want to say thank you for sharing your wife Rachel's story. I know firsthand how hard it is to speak about these tragedies and traumas. 30 years ago, I was hit head-on by a drunk driver," said Sen. Lujan. Duffy has been contributing to Fox News since 2020. He also spent more than eight years in Congress as a GOP representative from Wisconsin.
