ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Albuquerque Police Department announced the city is seeing a decrease in car thefts. From 2016 to 2018, Albuquerque ranked number one for car thefts across the U.S according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. The city has now dropped to number six on the list. Woman pleads guilty to killing teen in downtown Albuquerque APD Chief Harold Medina said while the city has seen a decrease, the state as a whole saw more auto thefts last year. "Last year, we had three more cities enter the top fifty that hadn't been in the top fifty before. I think that was Las Cruces, Farmington, and Santa Fe entered into the top fifty stolen cars," said Medina. Medina said technology like bait cars, license plate readers, and cameras have helped make a difference locally. He also said Hyundai and KIA are no longer the most stolen car of the year which the department credited to steering wheel locks.
