Cincinnati is vying to become the host of the Sundance Film Festival, and those involved in the effort want to learn the opinions of people there about the prospects of the top marketplace of independent films in the U.S. relocating to the Queen City. They also are seeking to understand some of the issues festival-goers may encounter should it be held in Cincinnati. An organization called Film Cincinnati, which is involved in the work to attract Sundance, has posted a questionnaire centered on the film festival. One of the telling questions inquires about what someone sees “as the major impediments to attending the Sundance Film Festival in Cincinnati.” The answer options include:The cost of travel The availability of accommodations Amenities like restaurants and entertainment  Security and safetyEach issues listed as a major impediment is consequential in Park City as well. Travel and lodging are typically among the most expensive aspects of a trip to Sundance, while restaurants are oftentimes jammed during the festival. Safety and security are crucial to the City Hall blueprints for Sundance each year. Some of the other questions:Whether someone would attend Sundance if it were held in Cincinnati starting with the 2027 edition. Answer options range from very likely to very unlikely. The likeliness that someone would recommend attending Sundance if it’s Cincinnati, with answer options ranging from very likely to very unlikely. Someone’s “main feelings” about Sundance moving to Cincinnati. Answer options include excited, neutral and concerned.“Cincinnati will have a community of people at the festival as they often do,” said Kristen Schlotman, president/CEO of Film Cincinnati. “Historically, they have activated a Cincinnati House, as well as, hosted talks and events to support the many independent productions filmed in Cincinnati premiering at the festival year after year.”Cincinnati is one of three finalists to become the host of the festival after the agreement between Park City and Sundance expires. The 2025 and 2026 festivals are planned as normal in Park City and the traditional outlying locations, with the possibility of a relocation outside of Utah in 2027. Boulder, Colorado, and a combined bid between Park City and Salt Lake City are the other two finalists. The bid between Park City and Salt Lake City conducted a similar survey, but neither the questions nor the results were available early in the week.Boulder, meanwhile, is preparing for the upcoming festival as its bid continues. The city of Boulder said officials are planning to travel to Park City to attend Sundance “to familiarize ourselves with the festival operations and how we would address logistics needs in Boulder if Boulder were to be selected.” Details about the Boulder contingent were not available.Sundance starts Jan. 23 and continues until Feb. 2. The opening four days, from Thursday until Sunday, normally are the busiest, with traffic typically the most of the festival and the Main Street scene usually reaching its height. The preparations for Sundance are underway. Numerous temporary festival and corporate installations will appear before the festival opening and City Hall will implement a series of restrictions in the Main Street core during Sundance.Sundance organizers last spring launched a process to select a location for the festival once the current deal with City Hall expires. Cities from across the U.S. expressed interest in submitting a proposal. Sundance in the summer narrowed the field to six places before selecting the three finalists in the fall. A decision is expected sometime after the 2025 festival closes. The selection process has attracted widespread interest in the Park City area with the future of the community’s largest and most lucrative special event at stake. The lodging, transportation and restaurant industries typically enjoy some of their best numbers during the festival. Film lovers in Park City have for decades looked forward to January and the opportunity to be among the first to see some of the best work from outside the major studios. The post Cincinnati asks about Sundance ‘impediments’ like costs, accommodations and safety appeared first on Park Record.
