NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Isle of Wight County man at the center of a major explosives case will go to trial May 28. Brad Spafford, 36, had more than 150 bombs, explosive materials and other devices in his home and detached garage on Foursquare Road, according to a federal indictment. FBI: Homemade explosives seizure at Isle of Wight farm largest in its history Spafford faces just two charges currently, but even his attorneys expect the list to grow. He pleaded not guilty Wednesday afternoon to one count each of having a short barreled rifle and having an unregistered explosive device. A federal prosecutor said several items are being analyzed, along with soil samples. An indictment states that Spafford stored highly explosive material next to food in a freezer, and the FBI found apparent recipes for making explosives. The charges say the dangerous items were easily accessible for his children, with some even in a bedroom. Docs: Isle of Wight Co. man faces federal weapons charge Documents describe Spafford as anti-government and was in the process of fortifying his new house with weaponry including the pipe bombs and a turret for a .50 caliber gun.      Neither Spafford's attorneys nor friends and family who attended his arraignment wanted to comment on the case. His attorneys said federal law is vague when it comes to defining exactly what makes something "explosive." Analysis on the evidence and soil samples is expected to be completed by the end of March. A prosecutor said agents seized 18 devices, and one phone contained 500,000 images.
