NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY ) — Just 15 days into 2025, there have already been three victims of gun violence in Newport News — all teenagers. The response from police, the mayor and local activists is that they want the gunfire to stop. A double shooting left two teens in the hospital Tuesday night and a shooting at a bus stop in the early hours Wednesday left another teen in the hospital. All those injured are expected to recover. The bus stop shooting is the third one this school year alone. Community members say it's time to step up and stop this violence before it grows out of hand. "It's go time — they are active so we got to get active," said Troy Ketchmore, Ketchmore Kids Inc. director of programs. That's Ketchmore's reaction. He and his sister founded Ketchmore Kids Inc., in 2005 with the idea of catching more kids than guns and 20 years later. They still work with local youth to provide hope, healing and peace of mind with programs like their Think Tank Positive Conflict Resolution courses and Positive Parenting Program — a way to let children know they are here to help. "You need to be doing something, you need to be dreaming, you need to planning but we're on the internet going back-and-forth worried about what everybody thinks, all of these things are creating situations that you don't want to be in," Ketchmore said. He says the violence doesn't have to continue, and he invites parents, mentors and leaders to get involved with the youth. "We're trying to intervene, we're trying to stop this," Ketchmore said. "The preventative part is key because if we're on the ground active, then it'll never take place." Newport News Police are following up on leads in both of those investigations.
