KAIMUKI, Hawaiʻi (KHON2) -- A popular and loved burger spot in Kaimuki known for its simple smash burgers and fries is getting ready to close its doors in February. Get Hawaii's latest morning news delivered to your inbox, sign up for News 2 You Before its Kaimuki location, Chubbies Burgers started as a food truck in Ward Village nearly nine years ago. In 2022, owner Jeffrey Nedry moved the business to its current restaurant space in Kaimuki. Popular all-you-can-eat McCully restaurant to close in February "We’ve loved it here, it's an awesome neighborhood. We had a short lease that we took over, so we’ve been trying to renew it," Nedry explained. Unfortunately, Nedry and the landlord were unable to come to an agreement. As a result, Chubbies will end its service in Kaimuki on Feb. 1, but Nedry said this isn't the end. "We definitely plan to continue to operate, we’re looking for a pop-up space for 2025 and we are working on a future location that I can’t announce details on yet, but hopefully by the end of the year we’ll open a future location that we’ve been working on." The Oahu community caught wind of the news, trying to get their final fix before they close. “We heard they were closing, we’ve always loved getting lunch from my office so we just wanted to get some in before they’re on to other stuff and leaving this location," said Ricky Muraoka, Chubbies customer. “It’s just a great burger, you know that smash-style burger, everything’s always fresh and good so we all like it.” Nedry thanked his customers for their constant support. "The support has been amazing throughout all the changes, and you know there’s more changes on the horizon but before you know it we’ll be back to serving the burgers you guys know and love."
