(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — The talk of the town for the last several days has been the cold weather on the way, and for good reason. This blast of arctic air is expected to break records as long as the forecast doesn't change too much. Currently, the coldest stretch of this outbreak is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 20 into Tuesday morning, Jan. 21 here in Southern Colorado. Temperatures early Tuesday morning may be 20 degrees below zero. High temperatures on Monday may not even get out of the negatives! It's going to be a brutally cold stretch of weather. Here's what we know: Arctic front looks to arrive Friday evening Snow is likely to accompany the front Cold weather will sit over the area for several days A couple different rounds of snow will be possible Slight improvements may be noted by Tuesday afternoon Using the temperatures aloft map (above), which references temperatures thousands of feet above the ground, we can see that powerful arctic front on the way by Friday evening. The timing of this front will partially dictate how our snow chances play out. As of Wednesday evening, Jan. 15, models indicate that most of Friday should be an okay day. Meaning, snow chances should hold off until the evening with a mixture of sunshine and clouds throughout the day. Temperatures are expected to be in the mid 40s which is average for the middle of January. By 9 p.m. however, things may start to look quite a bit different. Snow chances are expected to move in from the north, to the south. The Palmer Divide will be the first to see snow at this time as the energy makes its way down to some of the lower elevations. Most of El Paso County should see snow before the night is over. Heading into Saturday, that arctic front will have moved through the majority of the state. Temperatures will be in the single digits for most of the day with afternoon highs eventually reaching the mid teens. Widespread, light and relatively fluffy snow is expected for just about all of Southern Colorado on Saturday morning. Short term, hi-resolution model guidance data is still coming out but for right now, snow is likely to wrap up by Saturday evening. Certain models are indicating another round of snow may be possible Sunday afternoon into Monday morning. Timing confidence is still a bit up in the air for this second round of snow. As far as snow totals go, this multi-day stretch of arctic air and snow may leave the viewing area with a wide range of values. Snow total numbers are expected to change before the event! Even though accumulating snow is possible, if not likely, the cold will still be one of the bigger impacts. Wind chill values will also be an issue with some of the coldest temperatures arriving Monday night into Tuesday. Some models are indicating wind chills may be 30 to 35 degrees below zero at that time! The bitterly cold airmass is expected to slowly start recovering on Tuesday afternoon. Snow totals, temperatures, and timing are all still subject to change so be sure to keep checking in with the FOX21 Storm Team throughout the week.
