(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — A wave of brutally cold arctic air and snow is on the way for the weekend from Friday, Jan. 17 through Monday, January 20. Below is a glance at what the FOX21 News Storm Team has for temperatures during that time period as of Wednesday evening, Jan. 15 at 5 p.m. (Note: Forecast is subject to change slightly as additional model information comes in). While the weather will have some impact on travel, the temperatures could pose risks to your health and home. Here are some other risk factors you should plan for. Windchills When temperatures get as cold as single digits or below zero, you can see from the chart above from the National Weather Service that any kind of wind at all will make it feel significantly colder than what the actual temperature on your thermometer says. For the weekend, we do expect breezes at times which could make it feel like -20s to even -30s, especially in some spots through the weekend and on Monday. Windchills like this could make you susceptible to frostbite anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. Frostbite Frostbite occurs when your skin freezes during exposure to freezing temperatures, which will especially be the case at times this weekend. Frostbite symptoms can include pain, numbness, swelling, blisters, and skin discoloration. It’s most common on your fingers, toes, nose and ears. Treatment for frostbite varies based on the stage. The best thing you can do for frostbite is limit your time outdoors as much as possible. Protective clothing like hats, boots, and gloves can help in the short term but even if you’re wearing protective clothing you can still get frostbite through your clothing. How to prepare your home For cold like this, plan for the 5 P's: Pipes: At temperatures like this pipes can freeze and in some cases burst. Leave faucets to drip and try to wrap pipes with something (hardware stores sell special insulation to wrap pipes with if needed). Power: Have a plan on what to do if power goes out in the cold. Have warm blankets, candles, medication, food, and keep something to charge your phone and important electronics if needed. Do not run generators inside your home. People: Make sure your family has everything they need for the cold weather and check on your neighbors to make sure they have everything they need. Pets: Animals can get severely injured or worse in cold events like this. If you can't be outside, neither should they. Plants: Plants will not survive cold like this. Bring any house plants indoors.
