CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It’s one of the most famous phrases in American history – and Wednesday night, the Charlotte Knights were the home of the brave. “We’re hoping that we get some really good singers out here tonight,” says Tommy Viola, Vice President of Communications with the Knights. The Knights don’t take the field until March, but patriotism and vocal ranges were soaring higher than a towering fly ball as over 100 people came to audition for the honor of singing the Star-Spangled Banner at Truist Field this upcoming season. “Definitely nervous. I’ve never done anything like this before,” says Nic Capano, one of the auditioners. Capano drove from Davidson. He’s vying for one of the 75 spots – one for each home game this upcoming season. “I always love going to Knights games,” Capano says, “So I was like, ‘That would be kind of cool to start off a Knights game with signing the national anthem and hanging out for the game.’” Others came from farther away. Tamiko Reid made the hour-and-a-half drive from Winston-Salem to be here. “Being in the city just lights up my face,” beams Reid, “It’s like Christmas, Charlotte. It’s like Christmas to me. As soon as I saw the Charlotte sign, I was like, ‘We’re here, we’re here.’” Reid’s been singing since she was five years old – but this would be something new. “It would mean a lot to me,” Reid adds, “Seeing people, being around people, to see smiles on people’s faces, and to see how they react to you using the gift that God gave you.” And she’s hoping to honor her uncles who served this country in the Army and the Navy if she’s selected. “When I sing it, I think about them,” says Reid. “To actually have been a descendant of someone who served the country and served it proudly, that brings me joy and comfort.”
