BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- On Wednesday, we heard from the family of Isaias Alejandro, the Bakersfield man detained by Border Patrol Agents.
17 News first told Alejandro's story last Friday, when the gardener was stopped and arrested on his way to work, after agents slashed the tires of the car he was riding in.
The family says uncertainty and fear is what families like theirs feel after loved ones were detained by Border Patrol.
"We are not criminals in our country," said Magdalena Pedro in spanish, the wife of Isaias. "We are not criminals here or anywhere. We are hardworking people who put in the work, day after day."
Pedro's husband, Isaias Alejandro, was detained by Border Patrol during the raids in Kern County. Alejandro's arrest was taped by Ernesto Campos.
They are both gardeners who were driving to work. She didn't hear from him for days.
"After 48 hours, I believe so, or even more," said Pedro in spanish.
When Alejandro finally called, he was in a detention facility in Imperial County, east of San Diego.
"You can't imagine, it's so…it's so sad to know when a loved one, a significant other or a family member is taken," Pedro said in spanish.
A Customs and Border Protection spokesperson told 17 News it conducted "targeted enforcement arrests of individuals involved in smuggling throughout our areas of operation as part of our efforts to dismantle transnational criminal organizations."
Pedro says she doesn't believe that's the truth.
"I feel like they didn't honor their words, they took hardworking people," Pedro said in spanish. "Then, they say they're gone, but who knows?"
Pedro says both are fixing their immigration status.
"Yes, we came here as asylum seekers, so we are working with an attorney," she said. "We have an attorney and he's handling his arrest case now."
Their goal is for their 16-year-old son to finish school, but if his father is deported he would have to abandon that dream and go to work.
"This is an experience that has marked me for life. It's not death, but it is something horrible," said Pedro. "We're thrown out all of a sudden...unexpected."
