The seemingly endless Santa Ana winds will be replaced by cloudy skies and drizzle Thursday across San Diego County, but the moisture will do nothing to tamp down the threat of wildfires, the National Weather Service says. The precipitation will arise from a weak storm swirling southwest of San Diego. The system is expected to produce a trace of precipitation, or possibly 0.01 inches of rain, at and near the coast and a smidge more in the mountains and valleys. Daytime high temperatures will be several degrees below normal going into the weekend. San Diego International Airport has so far received only a trace of rain in January. There have only been two years in which the city has recorded a trace during the full month of January — in 1948 and 1976, the weather service said. There are no significant storms in the forecast through Jan. 28. Thursday’s cool, moist weather will spread across all of Southern California, helping firefighters battle the devastating, wind-driven wildfires that broke out early last week in Los Angeles County. The cold air will also help the region’s ski resorts make snow. The weather service said it appears that a new Santa Ana wind event will begin in Southern California on Monday and could last into Wednesday. It might become strong enough for forecasters to issue a red flag fire weather warning. Forecast models also suggest that a third windstorm is possible later next week.
