ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) - City leaders are working on new ways to address gun violence across Rochester. Although they reported a decrease in violent crime in the last year compared to 2023, officials, including Mayor Malik Evans, said there's more work to be done. Part of this new effort includes restricting those convicted of domestic violence-related crimes from being able to legally purchase a firearm. This is a concern statewide, as New York Governor Kathy Hochul alluded to in Tuesday's 2025 State of The State address. "We're working closely with law enforcement to apprehend and prosecute the rapists and to keep guns out of the hands of abusers," Hochul said. This work includes the governor's proposal of a new crime titled "Domestic Violence" to be listed under penal law, which could be charged alongside other offenses. By enacting this, it would require an offender to register with the FBI's Criminal Background Checks System (NICS), barring them from the ability to purchase a firearm. Evans on Wednesday added that a law like this could aid a continued decrease in gun violence overall. "We have plenty of stories where domestic violence has escalated to some serious, serious violence," Evans said. "It's something that we cannot tolerate, and Governor Hochul's proposal would strengthen that." Leaders like Evans said there's more to combat this issue than just implementing Hochul's proposed law. "Not only does that law need to be strengthened, but we also need the court system to make sure they are dealing with individuals that are perpetuating domestic violence and when they are picked up. The court system needs to make sure that these individuals don't come out and reoffend." Evans also mentioned the city's collaborations with their Crisis Intervention Services Team and outside organizations, including The Willow Center.
