COALINGA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - An 18-year-old confessed after he and another teenager were found attempting to burglarize cars in Coalinga, the Coalinga Police Department announced. Police say on Jan. 10 around 1 a.m. they were patrolling the area of Van Ness Avenue and Forest Street because of an increase in vehicle thefts and burglaries. Officers reported a person standing next to a Honda, serving as a lookout for someone else based on his movements. As officers got closer they saw another male inside the car wearing dark clothes and a ski mask. As police attempted to contact the two males suspected of burglarizing the vehicles, they say the suspects fled and refused to stop. Eventually, the suspects, later identified as 18-year-old Coalinga resident Armando Campos Jr and a 17-year-old Coalinga resident, were arrested a few blocks away. Investigators say the 17-year-old was found in possession of a vehicle ECU OBD scanner commonly used in this type of crime. During a Mirandized interview with Campos, officers say he admitted to meeting up with the other teen intending to break into vehicles for things to steal. Campos also admitted they had already gone through multiple other vehicles, searching for ones that were unlocked. As a result, police say the 17-year-old was booked on suspicion of charges related to burglary, resisting and obstructing an officer, trespassing, conspiracy, and possession of burglary tools.
