Jan 15, 2025
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be on the same day as Inauguration Day this year, and many public offices, buildings and programs throughout San Diego County will be closed Monday in observance of the holiday.
Those impacted by the closures include all public county offices, public health clinics, family resource centers, library branches and animal shelters.
What will be closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (and Inauguration Day) 2025?
Although county parks, campgrounds and neighborhood day-use parks are open year-round, the following locations will be closed on Monday:
Fallbrook Community Center
Lakeside Community Center
Spring Valley Community Center
Spring Valley Gymnasium
4S Ranch Recreation Office
Community Teen Centers
Valley Center Community Hall and Adams Park Pool
In addition, schools around the county will not hold classes or office hours on Monday. Law enforcement, emergency animal control response and other essential services are expected to remain available during the holiday.
The federal holiday is observed each year on the third Monday in January around the same time as King's birthday -- Jan. 15, 1929 -- to recognize his leadership in nonviolent activism during the Civil Rights Movement in the 50s and 60s. The legislation designating Martin Luther King Jr. Day was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on Nov. 2, 1983.
