SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry and his wife, Ayesha Curry, are helping public schools in Oakland where high levels of lead plague water systems and pose health hazards to students. The power couple's nonprofit organization, Eat. Learn. Play., announced on Wednesday that it donated more than half a million dollars to rapidly install water filtration stations across 60 elementary, middle and high schools this school year. Elevated lead levels were found in nearly 200 fountains and faucets at Oakland Unified School District buildings during testing last spring and summer. Eat. Learn. Play. partnered with Kaiser Permanente and TomKat Foundation for the effort, installing FloWater Refill Stations inside OUSD schools over the past four months. Stations are currently providing thousands students with access to safer, highly-filtered drinking water. "With the commitment of $650,000, this initiative is a critical and immediate first step toward addressing the discovery of elevated lead levels in the water at numerous OUSD schools," the Currys' nonprofit organization wrote. Play. fast-tracked "phase 1" of the school district’s clean water plan to prevent dangerous lead exposure. The first phase focused on schools with the highest number of unusable water fountains and the largest student populations. “We are so thankful to Stephen, Ayesha,  Eat. Learn. Play., Kaiser Permanente, and Kat Taylor for stepping in at this critical time,” said Kyla Johnson-Trammell, OUSD Superintendent. "This funding provides significant support to help us address this serious health issue while we work on long-term solutions." "Our mission is to ensure that every Oakland student has the resources and support they need to reach their full potential, and access to clean water is a fundamental part of that," said Chris Helfrich, CEO of Eat. Learn. Play. "Every child deserves access to clean water. It’s a basic necessity and a non-negotiable priority for us. They need clean water now, and we're committed to making that happen." The school district is still working to fix its foundational infrastructure for long-term solutions. OUSD outlined future phases that include purchasing 88 more filtration stations, testing remaining schools, and replacing old water fixtures. Students at Oakland schools with lead in water should get blood tests, officials say The most common sources of lead in drinking water are lead pipes, faucets, and plumbing fixtures, according to the CDC. Officials with the CDC wrote, "No safe blood level has been identified for young children. Lead can be harmful to human health even at low exposure levels. Lead is a toxic metal that is persistent in the environment and can accumulate in the body over time." Eat. Learn. Play. was founded by Stephen Curry and Ayesha Curry in 2019. Their organization's mission is to provide three pillars for a healthy childhood: nutrition, education, and physical activity. The couple has made several appearances at local public schools to kickoff special initiatives over the past five years.
