MANHATTAN (KSNT) - The City of Manhattan is attacking what's left of the snow left behind by a big blizzard on the roads in an all-out blitz. The City of Manhattan is eager to finish clearing the snow by starting its 'Snow Blitz' clean up. Manhattan got close to 16 inches of snow, which is the most it's seen in 125 years and the second-largest snowfall on record. City crews were out in full force working to clear the streets on Tuesday, Jan. 14. 27 News spoke to Dan Tyson with the City of Manhattan to get a better idea of what crews will be doing. "We have five different areas and the City of Manhattan doing one public work, and we have contractors doing the other four," Tyson said. "Our main concern is to open up the roads wider for two-lane traffic to pass through or clean up at any of the intersections and alley entrances." Flint Hills Discovery Center names new director Snow Blitz is a big project, broken into five different zones. Between city workers and contractors, it's a job that takes a lot of people to accomplish. 27 News spoke to Andrew Lawson, city communications, about how many people are out working to get the snow cleaned up. "I'm just guesstimating here," Lawson said. "Probably, upwards of 50 people are out basically doing this effort for the rest of the week." "So we estimate about 15 to 16 inches of snow we actually received," Tyson said. "The snow that we've picked up and hauled it off, so far is equivalent to filling up Bill Snyder Family Stadium about 400 feet deep." The Little Apple has multiple dump spots for snow which are mostly parking lots, fields, or parks. That is where all of the snow is going. Lawson said the cleanup is going well, but the public can help the process run even smoother. "Get your cars off the street during the day while we're coming through the areas," Lawson said. "We'll try and do a good job of communicating specifically where we're at." After clearing as much snow as possible, crews hope to go back and apply a salt solution to accelerate the melting. The city hopes to have most of this completed by the end of the week but will keep going until the work is done. For more local news, click here.
