SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) - When the owner of Sweet Patricia's Bakery shared they needed financial support to grow the small business, customers immediately showed up for them. "We had to reevaluate where we were, because without the extra money, the business can't sustain the way it is," Chef Andria Canella said. Canella had the idea to start serving beer and wine, but they couldn't afford the permit fees, which can vary. "It was kind of one of those things where you're here every day, and we're doing the best we can to keep the doors open and keep everybody paid. And then you think you have a solution for it, and you just hit a dead wall," the chef said. Savannah’s walking tours could face new restrictions after dark In a last-ditch effort to keep the bakery alive, Canella's friend started a GoFundMe which surpassed its $6,000 goal in just 24 hours. "I think it was really good for all of our self-esteem to just be picked up a little bit to realize so many people cared that we stayed in this space," Canella said. The bakery is located on Habersham Street and is named after Canella's grandma, Pat. The spot has become special to their customers as well. Canella says they've made it their mission to create a safe and welcoming environment for all. "We know most of our people by name. We want people to feel seen and heard here and that this is a safe space for everybody," Canella said. Best bakeries in Savannah, according to WSAV viewers Joe Kelley and Jo Hailey have been regulars since the start in 2022. The staff here call them their grandparents. The pair shared just how much they love walking in and seeing smiling faces. "This has turned out to be a really important part of our life," Hailey said. "And the people who live here are part of our lives, too." "The food is wonderful. It's always really good," Kelley added. Once the requirements for a beer and wine permit are met, Sweet Patricia's will be able to expand their hours and offerings. They hope this will bring in more money, so they can continue to harvest relationships in this community.
