PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Farmville man was sentenced on Wednesday for being a felon in possession of a firearm after a Richmond Police officer found him in possession while he was asleep in a car that was left in drive in October 2023.
According to the Department of Justice, 32-year-old Pierre Redd, of Farmville, was sentenced to 13 years and four months in prison on Wednesday, Jan. 15 for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
According to court documents, an officer with the Richmond Police Department encountered Redd asleep in the driver seat of a vehicle that was stopped at a Richmond intersection on Oct. 31, 2023.
Officials said the car was in drive at the time and the officer saw a loaded handgun in plain view between Redd's legs, as well as a bag containing 15.3 grams of cocaine in his hand.
The officer reportedly opened the driver-side door, removed the firearm and cocaine, and awakened Redd.
According to the Department of Justice, the officer then directed Redd to place the car in park before he reached into the vehicle to put the car in park himself. Redd was then directed to exit the vehicle.
After Redd repeatedly failed to comply, the officer placed a handcuff on Redd's left wrist. Redd then placed the car in drive and drove away.
Officials said the officer returned to his police vehicle and pursued Redd with the vehicle's lights and siren engaged.
As Redd drove away, he reportedly ran multiple stop signs and drove on the wrong side of the street. Redd eventually pulled into an apartment complex, where he exited his vehicle without putting it in park, according to officials.
The Department of Justice said the officer eventually arrested Redd after a pursuit on foot.
At the time of the offense, Redd had several previous felony convictions, including for attempted malicious wounding, reckless handling of a firearm, receiving a stolen firearm, forgery of public records and possession of heroin.
As a previously convicted felon, Redd cannot legally possess a firearm or ammunition, according to the Department of Justice.
