NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A 17-year-old boy was injured after a shooting near a bus stop on Windsor Court Wednesday morning, police said. According to officials, just after 6:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Windsor Court in reference to a shooting. Officers arrived to the scene and found a 17-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound. He was then taken to a local hospital, where he is said to be in stable condition. Neighbors in the area told 10 On Your Side's Karina Garcia they are sick of the violence in the neighborhood. "I have my grandmother that has been here all my life, and she specifically said she doesn't go down Kings Ridge Drive because of all the crime and activity there," one neighbor said. "I just moved back in June, and I can say there's been about three different instances where, you know, someone's been shot. So, I mean, even thinking further, I don't even know if it's safe for me to come down this way." The incident remains under investigation. Newport News Public Schools confirms that the boy is a student in the school division. "Following the incident, the Newport News Police Department and other first responders reported immediately," according to a statement from NNPS. "The victim received prompt care and is currently in stable condition at a local hospital. Our thoughts are with him and his family." The school division said there would be a police presence near the bus stop Wednesday and Thursday. Mayor Philip Jones, in a statement, said he was "deeply concerned" by shootings involving young people Newport News Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Jones' statement is below: I am deeply concerned by the shootings that occurred last night and this morning involving juveniles in our community especially given the tragic incident that also involved a juvenile a few short months ago. While we are thankful there were no fatalities, these incidents highlight the urgent need to address violence amongst our youth. While these were isolated incidents, they are a stark reminder of the challenges we face in keeping our city safe and ensuring that all our young people have opportunities for growth and education rather than resorting to violence. We must all come together to ensure that our children grow up in a safe environment, one where violence has no place and where they can thrive without fear. City Council will continue to work tirelessly to create solutions to foster a stronger, more resilient community for all. I am grateful to our first responders, and I assure our community that we are taking every step to ensure the safety and well-being of our youth.
