Portsmouth Humane Society thanks community for support after HVAC failure

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The colder weather in the Hampton Roads region is proving to be tough on HVAC units.
As 10 On Your Side reported to you this week, an animal shelter in Portsmouth felt the effects of this last Friday.

Since then the community support came out in droves.
On top of the many HVAC companies that have reached out to help, the Portsmouth Humane Society said 12 of their dogs were fostered out since the issues started.
"As we all know, temperatures were really low last week, and that puts a strain on any HVAC system," said Dyanna Uchiek with the Portsmouth Humane Society.
It was a rush to keep the dogs warm after their heating systems went out Friday. Space heaters now litter the shelter. It is a maze in there.
"They're huge," Uchiek said. "So it's impacted our ability to have people walk through the adoptable dog areas. It's a safety issue. We can't move them out of the way. The temperatures in the dog kennels are holding."
More than 70 animals are in the shelter, with about 50 in the areas primarily affected by the outage. They made a call for help, and 10 On Your Side helped spread the message.
Since then, countless fleece blankets have been donated for the dogs — many donations came through, and many HVAC companies reached out. They are offering to get the job done as affordable as possible. The Humane Society will still need to pay for parts and other repair costs, likely spending tens of thousands of dollars for the work.
Uchiek hopes they go back to normal operations by next week. Still, they are thankful for the incredible amount of support from Portsmouth and the rest of Hampton Roads.
"Moments like these are a stark reminder that when we're providing support services, human services or animal services," Uchiek said, "we can't do this work without the community."
