Today, Vice Mayor Dan Wu announced the creation of a new task force dedicated to increasing road safety. This group, titled the STREEET (Shared Travel Requires Engineering, Education & Enforcement of Traffic) Safety Task Force, will investigate, advocate and drive the changes necessary to address safety concerns across all modes of transportation in Fayette County.  In 2022, the Urban County Council adopted a “Complete Streets” policy for reimagining multimodal travel. This comprehensive policy will take decades to roll out in newly engineered projects, but this task force is intended to close gaps and address immediate issues and needs.  “The STREEET Safety Task Force, made up of Council Members, community partners, LFUCG staff and public safety professionals,” Vice Mayor explained, “will focus on short-term solutions in three key areas: Engineering, Education, and Enforcement, in order to reduce traffic collisions, incidents, and dangerous driving.” Each key area will be led and championed by Council Members with support from the rest of the task force.  The task force will be co-chaired by Councilmember Sevigny and Councilmember Sheehan. “We look forward to working alongside colleagues and other expert members of this task force to identify cutting-edge, data-driven solutions being used around the country to help address immediate pedestrian and traffic safety challenges.” Councilmember Sheehan shared. Alice Hilton, local transportation advocate, will join the task force as a community representative. “Lexington residents are ready for innovative, best practice short term solutions to create safer streets that work for all of us and that support healthy, thriving communities.” She stated, “I’m looking forward to the work of this taskforce and am excited to see the possibilities that emerge from it.” The STREEET Safety Task Force will include members of the Urban County Council as well as representatives from Public Safety, Planning, Engineering, the County Attorney’s office, and the community.  The STREEET Safety Task Force will begin meeting as an official group in the coming weeks and intends to give their first report in Fall 2025.
