INDIANAPOLIS - Potholes are starting to crack across Indianapolis roads after temperatures rose above the freezing mark this past weekend. Several inches of snow dropped over central Indiana in early January, plunging the Circle City into sub-freezing temperatures, but a weekend warm-up cracked roadways as the freeze-thaw cycle began. Indy Parks to open warming center before temperatures plummet Jody Beach, the owner of Beach Automotive off of Harding Street, thinks Harding and the roads around it have some of the worst potholes in the city. ”You have to swerve to miss them," Beach said. ”People are seriously like, 'Are you drunk or are you just driving around the potholes?'" Beach said he also hears about pothole issues from his customers. ”She wiped out the lower side of her car, so she had to get a new rim and a new tire," Beach said, referring to one of his customers who had hit a pothole near Harding Street. After the snow was done falling last weekend, those same Indianapolis Department of Public Works plow crews switched to pothole filling. Neighbors along Harding Street said some of their potholes were filled this week. But, Beach said new ones will pop up and the smaller ones will grow. ”It's unfortunate, you can actually watch them grow," Beach said. "Most people buy chia pets and we just have potholes. Like, ya give them some water and watch them grow." It’s a similar case across the city. There were roughly 2,500 open potholes reported on the Indy Pothole Viewer. ”I would say this is one of our busiest times of the year," said Auboni Hart, a spokesperson with Indy DPW. Hart said Indy DPW pothole crews have been out patching the roads this week, but they had to be held back Wednesday because of the single-digit temperatures outside. ”It’s very important we prioritize the safety of all of our crew members," Hart said. Indiana Republicans introduce bill to legalize recreational marijuana It could still be a while before crews get the much preferred hot asphalt mix. Hart said a busier winter can push back how soon the hot mix can be available. ”We are just kind of waiting and seeing where this weather goes before we can get access to the hot mix," she said. For now, it’ll be the cold asphalt mix to fill pesky potholes.
