INDIANAPOLIS – A Wednesday morning shooting that left a man dead stemmed from a pair of attempted robberies, police say.
Indianapolis Metropolitan police were dispatched to the 5700 block of West 86th Street around 5:40 a.m. for a reported robbery and a shots fired run.
Upon arrival, Northwest District officers found a man who’d been shot. He was taken to an area hospital, where he later died. Police believe the man is a robbery suspect.
According to Tommy Thompson, a public information officer for IMPD, the man and one other suspect attempted to rob a person in the vicinity. The victim was able to get away and reported the incident.
The suspects then targeted another person in a second robbery, police said, and their target was armed. The individual fired shots, later causing the death of one of the would-be thieves. The other suspect ran away from the area and remains at large.
Investigators recovered a knife from the scene.
Police said both victims of the attempted robberies were cooperating with detectives.
The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS (8477).
